1. Meta Just Cut 600 AI Jobs — But It’s Not What You Think

Meta has laid off around 600 employees from its superintelligence lab as part of a larger reorganization strategy, according to Axios. Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang said the move is meant to make teams more efficient and “load-bearing,” echoing CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “year of efficiency” mantra. Despite the cuts, Meta says most affected staff will have opportunities to transfer within the company.

  • Around 600 jobs are being cut from Meta’s superintelligence lab.

  • The move follows a major hiring spree, including over 50 researchers poached from rival AI labs.

  • Meta cites the need for smaller, faster-moving teams with greater individual impact.

  • Most affected employees may be reassigned to other Meta divisions rather than fully laid off.

2. Over a Million People Talk to ChatGPT About Suicide Each Week —But at What Cost?

OpenAI revealed that over a million ChatGPT users weekly discuss suicidal thoughts with the chatbot — a staggering statistic highlighting the growing role of AI in mental health conversations. The company says it’s working to make ChatGPT safer, especially as more users form emotional attachments to the AI.

The Details:

  • About 0.15% of ChatGPT users weekly show signs of suicidal intent or planning — equivalent to over a million people.

  • Hundreds of thousands display emotional attachment or symptoms of mania and psychosis in conversations.

  • OpenAI collaborated with 170+ mental health experts to improve ChatGPT’s responses, with GPT-5 showing 91% compliance on safety tests.

  • The company is developing age detection tools and parental safeguards for child users.

Why it Matters: 

This revelation underscores how deeply intertwined AI has become with human emotional lives — and how unprepared society may be for that reality. While OpenAI’s new safeguards represent progress, the reliance of vulnerable users on AI chatbots raises ethical, legal, and emotional concerns. The platform’s role as both confidant and potential risk factor blurs the line between support and harm. As AI becomes more human-like, the question isn’t just how well it can listen — but how responsibly it should.

3. He Inherited His Mom’s Kidney Disease — Now He’s Using AI to Cure It.

Biotech startup Nephrogen, founded by Demetri Maxim, is using AI and gene therapy to target and potentially reverse Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Inspired by his own diagnosis, Maxim developed a breakthrough drug delivery mechanism that’s 100 times more effective than current FDA-approved methods.

The Details:

  • 1 in 7 Americans have Chronic Kidney Disease, and 10% of cases are genetic.

  • Nephrogen uses AI and advanced screening to deliver gene-editing medicine directly to diseased kidney cells.

  • The company’s drug delivery system is 100x more efficient than current options.

  • Nephrogen plans to start clinical trials by 2027 and is raising a $4M seed round.
