In a candid podcast, he likened the model’s development to the Manhattan Project—warning its speed and scale are moving faster than regulators or even he can control. With internal and external pressure mounting, Altman’s fears highlight the growing tension between innovation and oversight in the AI race.

  • While testing GPT‑5, Altman admitted he felt “very nervous” and described the experience as eerie—“it feels very fast.”

  • He drew a chilling parallel to the Manhattan Project, saying: “What have we done?” as the scale of AI capabilities surged.

2. Trump to Hit Chips with Tariffs—AI & Hardware Industry on Edge

President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will roll out new tariffs on semiconductors and chips as early as next week. While details remain scarce, the move could dramatically impact AI and U.S. hardware firms already navigating chip shortages and export regulations. The announcement follows the rollback of Biden-era AI chip export rules and the release of Trump’s own AI Action Plan.

The Details:

  • Trump confirmed the upcoming tariffs during an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

  • These new tariffs would target semiconductors and chips—critical components for AI and tech industries.

  • While the U.S. CHIPS Act invested $52B into boosting domestic chip manufacturing, production still lags behind demand.

  • Intel and TSMC have received CHIPS Act funding, but Intel recently delayed its Ohio chip plant, reflecting real-world scaling issues.

  • The Trump administration scrapped the Biden AI export restrictions in May and is now reconsidering how to control advanced AI chip exports.

  • The AI Action Plan (July 2025) emphasizes the importance of export control but lacks specifics—creating uncertainty for chipmakers.

  • Industry insiders say the administration is still debating whether to fully replace the previous export framework or modify it.

Why it Matters: 

Tariffs on semiconductors could ripple through the global supply chain, pushing costs higher for AI, robotics, and hardware manufacturers. If paired with looser export restrictions, it might also open the door for unintended tech transfers. As AI becomes more power-hungry and chip-dependent, every shift in trade policy hits harder. The balance between national security and innovation is growing more fragile by the week.

3. ElevenLabs Drops AI Music Generator—And Says It’s Cleared for Commercial Use

AI voice giant ElevenLabs just launched an AI music generator it claims is cleared for commercial use, setting itself apart from competitors facing legal heat. With partnerships from Kobalt and Merlin Network, the model opens a new front in AI-generated content—though not without cultural and ethical questions as synthetic voices rap about real-world struggles they never lived.

The Details:

  • ElevenLabs, known for text-to-speech and multilingual voice translation tools, just unveiled an AI model that generates music with vocals and beats.

  • The company claims the tool is safe for commercial use—a major differentiator amid lawsuits facing rivals like Suno and Udio.

  • ElevenLabs cut deals with Kobalt Music Group and Merlin Network, giving them access to catalogs from artists like Childish Gambino, Bon Iver, Adele, and Nirvana—but only from artists who opt-in.

  • The tool includes synthetic rap tracks that mimic lyrical styles and cultural themes rooted in real-life experience, raising ethical concerns about AI-generated appropriation.

  • Kobalt says clients gain new revenue streams, safeguards, and revenue sharing under favorable terms.

  • Meanwhile, Suno and Udio are in talks with record labels after facing lawsuits for allegedly training their models on copyrighted music without permission.

Why it Matters: 

ElevenLabs is trying to do AI music “the right way”—with licensing, opt-ins, and shared revenue. But as AI starts to emulate lived human expression in lyrical form, the line between inspiration and imitation gets blurry fast. The big question: Will the music industry embrace AI-generated art—or fight it in court and culture alike?
